I am Bilabi Moses a second year student of the Uganda Christian University. I come from Buboolo parish, Bukissa Village, Masaba sub-county in Sironko district of Eastern Uganda. Masaba sub-county is characterised as being hilly since it is in the Mt Elgon region and blessed with many rivers.

The sanitation and safety of the water here is still poor because of constant heavy rains that flood and contaminate the waters making it un safe for drinking. The poor sanitation in Masaba communities is mainly due to ignorance and conservativeness since almost 60% of the population is illiterate. (more…)

Uganda: A rooster for payment of water fees


“A rooster for payment of water user fees at Loa borehole in Adjumani District in Uganda” is another story in the Source field story contest 2o10.

Communities in Uganda are responsible for making cash payments towards the initial constructing of a borehole as well as  to operating and maintaining of water supply facilities.  A Water Source and Sanitation Committee (WSSC) should ideally be established at each water point to manage its operation.
